Prince Fernando (1819 - 1885)

German Prince, born on 29th October 1819, was baptized with the name of Fernando Augusto Francisco António de Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
By marriage to Queen Mary II in 1836, he became Prince of Portugal and, later, King Consort. According to Portuguese law, Fernando Saxe-Coburg-Gotha became King of Portugal jure uxoris, only after the birth of their first son, the future King Pedro V.
Fernando was always more involved with arts and architecture rather than with the actual exercise of political power, which was with Queen Mary II, his wife.

His intervention is well known, particularly in Portuguese architectural heritage, namely the construction of the National Palace of Pena (Sintra) and rehabilitation of the Monastery of Batalha, but in what the Convent of Christ is concerned, his initiative to remove the covering of the Saint Barbara´s Cloister, so as to restore visibility to the Manueline window of the church west façade, came to allow for the reading of this remarkable piece of sculpture to be possible nowadays.
